NCM to visit Nandigram, Kolkata to probe atrocities on people

New Delhi, Nov 24 (UNI) A delegation of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) will be leaving for Nandigarm and Kolkata on Monday for an on the spot study of complaints of atrocities on people allegedly perpetrated by the police and the CPI(M) cadres there.

The delegation, comprising NCM members Mr Harcharan Singh Josh and Mr Lama Jotpa, will meet West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, former chief minister Jyoti Basu, senior government officials and representatives from the public and the NGOs to assess whether the minority was the target of the wrath.

According to complaints received by the NCM, of the official figure of 14 persons killed in recent violent incidents in West Bengal, as many as 12 were from the Muslim community, Mr Josh told UNI here today.

''We are interested to probe the minority angle only while the human rights violations are being taken care of by the National Human Rights Commission,'' Mr Josh added .
