Dimapur, Nov 24: Goa Governor and former Nagaland Chief Minister S C Jamir today survived an attack by suspected NSCN (IM) militants near Assam-Nagaland border.
Mr Jamir left Mokochung for Dimapur this morning and reached Tsueptala gate when the NSCN (IM) ambushed his convoy, officials accompanying the governor said.
The cadres had reportedly used automatic weapons, grenades and even mortars but the 20-car strong convoy of the governor managed to withstand the fire for over 25 minutes before leaving the scene.
The India Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel protrected Mr Jamir and took him away from the scene. There was no casualty on either side, officials said adding that three vehicles of the convoy suffered minor damages. The proscribed outfit had, however, not taken any responsibility of the attacks.
The governor was in his home state for past few days and according to intelligence sources, the militants were keeping a close eye on his movements. Today's attack on Mr Jamir was for the third time in the past one decade.
The former chief minister was hence gracefully removed from the state and appointed as the governor of Goa.
