Chennai, Nov 24 (UNI) Dalit Leader and All India Ambedkar Makkal Katchi President V Balasundaram has been barred from entering Ramanathapuram District which recently witnessed tension following the stabbing of TNCC President M Krishnasamy and the murder of a school teacher.
The District Collector issued an order to this effect following a submission by the District Superintendent of Police who said the Dalit leader's visit would lead to communal disturbance.
The Collector accepted the police contention that ''the vist of the Dalit leader would lead to communal clash, disturbance of public tranquility, riot affray in this district on the grounds of prevailing law and order situation.'' Taking exception to the Collector's order, Mr Balasundaram said the contention his visit would triger communal violence in the district was a slur on his 45-year public life and he would file a defamation case against the Collector.
In a statement here, Mr Balasundaram said it was a matter of regret he was not allowed to meet the Dalits who were being ''subjected to harassment'' in the district and declared he would move the court and visit the district after obtaining necessary orders.
He was deeply hurt. The District Collector, who should be protecting the people, disallowed his visit and prevented him from meeting Dalit victims, especially the family members of the school teacher, who was murdered at Mudhukalathur and offer solace.
Mr Balasundaram alleged Dalit houses were ransacked by anti-social elements at Keezhkannichery where the TNCC president was stabbed on the night of October 29.
Tension prevailed in the area for more than 25 days and none knew what exactly was happening in the village. It was a pity that even peace committees were not allowed to visit the villagers, he alleged.
