Guwahati, Nov 24 (UNI) The administration today imposed curfew as at least 12 persons were injured, five of them critically, when police opened fire during a demonstration by tribal students here.
Police sources said violence erupted after the Adivasi Students Union, protesting against their non-inclusion into schedule caste status, marched through the Beltola area here thus damaging hundreds of vehicles of the local residents.
Later, the irate locals also got involved in the pitched battle for hours thus forcing the police to lathicharge and fire several rounds.
About 3000 Adivasi students were staging demonstrations demanding schedule caste status for themselves.
At least 20 students' leaders have been arrested for instigating the violence.
The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals, sources said.
However, unofficial reports stated that at least two persons were killed in the incident.
