Guwahati, Nov 24: Curfew was imposed in Guwahati today following police firing on a demonstration by tribal students in which atleast 12 people were injured, five of them critically.
Police sources said violence erupted after the Adivasi Students Union, protesting against their non-inclusion into schedule caste status, marched through the Beltola area, here thus damaging hundreds of vehicles of the local residents.
Later, the irate locals also got involved in the pitched battle for hours thus forcing the police to lathicharge and fire several rounds.
About 3000 Adivasi students were staging demonstration demanding schedule caste status for themselves.
At least 20 students' leaders have been arrested for instigating the violence.
The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals, sources said.
However, unofficial reports stated that at least two persons were killed in the incident.
