SGPC calls for doing away with death penalty
Amritsar, Nov 23 (UNI) The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandik Committee (SGPC) today called for abolishing death penalty in the country.
A resolution to this effect was passed by the general house of the SGPC at its meeting at Teja Singh Samundri Hall in the Golden Temple complex here.
The resolution urged the Union Government to commute the death sentence awarded to Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) activist Davinder Singh Bullar to life imprisonment. Bhullar was awarded the death penalty in the attack on former All India Youth Congress chief Maninderjit Singh Bitta which left several dead and injured at the AIC headquarters in Delhi in the 1990's.
The sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court. Bhullar's mercy petition is pending before the President of India.
Through another resolution, the SGPC demanded that announcement on Railway stations in the neighbouring states of Punjab, including Delhi should also be made in Punjabi.
