Makkar gets third term as SGPC chief

Amritsar, Nov 23 (UNI) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) led by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal reimposed faith in Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar, electing him president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandik Committee (SGPC) for his third consecutive term.

Jathedar Makkar was unanmiously elected as chief of the presitigious body that looks after Sikh religious affairs was elected unanmiously. He was first elected to the top post in November 2005.

His name was proposed by former president Kirpal Singh Badungar at the commencement of the meeting of the SGPC general house at the Teja Singh Samundri hall in the Golden Temple complex here. As the other Akali factions did not put up any candidate, Jathedar Makkar was declared elected by the SGPC secretary.

Mr Raghujit Virk a member from Haryana was re-elected the senior Vice President while Kewal Singh Badal was re-elected the junior vice president. Mr Sukhdev Singh Bhaur was re-elected the general seceratry.

The elections to all the four SGPC posts were unanmious. The general house is in the process of electing the 11-member executive.

The SGPC members of the SAD had yesterday authorised Mr Badal to select the suitable person for the presidents post and the other office bearers. The Chief Minister had at the meeting of the SGPC members of his party praised the working of Jathedar Makkar, sending an indication that he would prefer him for another annual term.
