Law for 'rights of patients needed: Union Minister

Kochi, Nov 23 (UNI) Stressing the importance of providing quality healthcare, Union Minister for Oversreas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi today said the Centre should initiate steps to enact a law enumerating the 'rights of patients'.

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the three-day 'Hospitech-2007' here, Mr Ravi said, ''Patients should have the right to question the doctors treating them to know more about the treatment and disease.'' He said the 'rights of patients' would also encourage 'collective thinking' among doctors resulting in more effective dispensation.

Mr Ravi said a national debate invloving doctors, administrators and para-medical personnel should be initiated to discuss the quality of health care in the country.
