Nagpur, Nov 23 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today alleged that a member of the House was involved in money lending and had abetted the suicide of a poor farmer in Vidarbha region of the state.
Mr Kadam, who had given notice under Rule 57 for the suspension of the day's agenda to discuss the issue, said without naming anyone, that the farmer identified as Mahadev Dadgu Thakre, from Khamgaon in Buldhana district had left behind a suicide note holding the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) responsible for his death.
''The letter names the member, but I am not identifying him,'' Mr Kadam said, and submitted a copy of the suicide note to the Speaker.
The House had discussed the issue and the alleged involvement of the MLA and his father in money lending and land grabbing on earlier occasion also, but no action had been initiated against those involved, he said.
Mr Kadam wanted to know what action the government proposed to initiate against the member. ''Will the Chief Minister ask the member to resign? Will the government book him under section 302 (of the Indian Penal Code - murder) and arrest him,'' he asked.
The Leader of the Opposition had also sought the suspension of the agenda on the issue of the deaths of 536 children and 23 women due to malnutrition in various parts of the state.
However, Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar declined permission to both the notices from Mr Kadam. Mr Kupekar later also denied permission to the notice of adjournment motion submitted by Mr Kadam on the same issues.
