Injured elephant recovered from Brahmaputra banks
Jorhat, Nov 23 (UNI) A severely injured male elephant was today recovered from the banks of the Brahmaputra, about 20 km from here, after it managed to escape a gang of poachers.
The poachers were suspected to have attacked the elephant in Nemati Hatisal area, from where it was recovered in an injured state late last night, with sharp weapons.
The elephant managed to escape from the clutches of the poachers.
Forest and veterinary officials had rushed to the spot and the condition of the elephant was stated to be critical.
The elephant was believed to be a part of the herd of elephant that had been roaming the adjoining areas for more than a month in search of food. The local residents had been trying to keep the herd off the village limits but the elephants stray into human habitation frequently, leaving the local people and administration worried.
With the attempt at poaching, the administration's woes had doubled as it was now burdened with the responsibility of guarding the people from any elephant attack as well as the latter from poachers.
