Army withdrawn from five police station areas

Kolkata, Nov 23(UNI) With situation in the city fast returning to normal, the West Bengal Government today decided to withdraw the Army from the five police station areas that witnessed large scala violence on Wednesday last, over the demand for deportation of controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen.

'' The Army is being withdrawn today from the five police station areas,'' Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray told reporters.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting after reviewng the situation in the affected areas.

Altogether six columns of Army of the Gorkha regiment had been deployed in the Park Street, Topsia, Beniapukur, Entally and Karya police station areas.

When asked if ISI or SIMI was involved in the attack ,he said the government was waiting rfor intelligence reports.

Yesterday, the Government had also lifted the the night curfew, clamped in those areas following improvement in the situation.
