Mumbai, Nov 23: In a 'London and Mumbai- Creative celebration, the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone presented Bollywood Superstar Amitabh Bachchan with ''the Visit London Special award for outstanding Achievement'', sponsored by Virgin Atlantic here at a special ceremony held at the Taj Mahal Palace Towers in Mumbai last night.
According to an initiative, where London and Mumbai celebrate their creative industries programme hosted by Ken Livingstone, a star-studded evening comprised of programmes by the likes of 'Stomp' the British Theatre Sensation, The Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company, a performance by Sonu Nigam, Myleene Klass and Simon Brown actor West End Star and international concert and recording artiste, was organised.
Speaking on the occasion, Amitabh Bachchan who was accompanied by Abhishek and Aishwarya said, ''Thank you for the accolades and generosity. May this association be filled with laughter, love and joy. The cultural programmes were wonderful and after seeing the opera I was getting goose pimples.
''The Mayor informs , ''There are approximately 10,000 Indian owned businesses in London employing 49,000 people. India's overseas investment in Europe has multiplied ten times in the past eight years. London accounts for just over 32 per cent of all European investments from India. In 2006, visitors to London from India spent more than those from Japan for the first time. India is London's top 20 inbound markets with 230,000 visits from India in 2006 up from 166000 in 2005.''
The event comes as a part of the Mayor of London's official week-long visit to India titled ''London and India partners in globalisation,'' to promote London as a destination for business, tourism and creative industries and to strengthen relationships between the two countries. It also follows a series of cultural events and collaborations.
This summer, London hosted ''India Now'' a three month series of events and exhibitions dedicated to Indian art film, theatre music, fashion, food and business. Rahul Dravid, fashion designer Manish Arora and actors Shahrukh Khan, Celina Jaitely, Shilpa Shetty were some of the well known faces who came to London to celebrate ''India Now''.
