Young lady seriously injured in acid attack

Kolhapur, Nov 22 (UNI) A young woman received serious burn injuries, when a man threw acid on her here last night.

The lady, identified as Sujata Narendra Gadgil (23), was entering her flat last night when Ashok Sonar alias Potdar allegedly threw acid on her, police sources said here today.

She was rushed to the nearby hospital by her family members and neighbours in a serious condition.

Immediately after the incident, police swung into action and arrested Sonar last night. He was remanded to five days police custody by a local court today.

Sonar, working as a newspaper seller, has a six year old child and his wife had committed suicide earlier. He used to visit the lady's apartment daily to sell newspaper and during these visits he developed an attachment towards her.

As the woman did not respond to him, Sonar took his revenge by throwing acid on her, police sources added.

This was the third incident of acid attack on women since September 29 when a police woman Vidhya Gaikwad became victim of an acid attack by a youth. In the other incident, a hostel girl was seriously injured when her father threw acid on her over a marriage, without his consent.
