New Delhi, Nov 22 (UNI) Title contender Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) were outplayed by star studded Bharat Petroleum 1-3 but still became the first team to qualify for the semi finals of the 46th Nehru Hockey tournament here today by virtue of better goal difference.
Still Bharat Petroleum also has a chance to make it to the semis unless PNB XI creats a big upset and beat Indian Oil by six goal margin tomorrow.
PSB finished the super league assignments with 6 points from three matches having scored 11 goals and conceded 5.Bharat Petroleum also have six points from three outing but they have scored 8 goals and conceded seven.
Other matches Indian Airlines and IHF(u-21)kept their hopes alive for the last four berths by winning and drawing their respective matches.
Indian Airlines over powered Border Security Force 3-1 while IHF (u-21) drew with Namdhari XI 3-3.
In a fast paced encounter, Bharat Petroleum with several olympians and Internationals in their ranks, put behind their yesterday's 1-3 defeat, put up a better show as they outplayed the Bankmen leading 2-1 at half time.
Amar gave Petroleum side the lead in the 13th minute, and then Hari increased the margin in the 29th minute. However just before the breather Sandeep Singh converted a penalty corner to reduce the margin for the bankmen.
The Petroleum side kept the pressure on in the second session also and in the 46th minute Paramjeet fired the third goal for them and that sealed the match in their side.
PSB made some attempts but they could not penetrate into the rival's crowded defence.
Penalty corner specialist Sandeep Singh continued with his dazzling form as he scored two goal to help Indian Airlines beat former champion BSF 3-1.
Sandeep converted a penalty corner in the 4th minute and then former Olympian Sameer Dad made it 2-0 in the 25th minutes.
Four minutes into the second session Sharanjit singh struck for BSF to make it 1-2, however, Sandeep converted a stroke in the 54th minute to end any hope BSF might have entertained for staging a come back in the game.
Indian Airlines have four points from two matches and they play IHF (u-21) who also have 4 points.
In the last match, Namdharis twice staged a come back before holding IHF(u-21) to a 3-3 draw.
Deewakar Ram scored a brace for the IHF converting penalty corners in the 2nd and 69th minutes while A B Cheeyana chipped in with a goal in the 25th minute.
For Namdhari's Gurcharan Singh twice equalised converting a penalty corner in the 20th minute and then scoring a fine goal in the 33rd minute. Sher Singh scored off a penalty corner in the 63rd minute to give Namdharis a lead which however they could not hold on.
