NEC entrusted with preparation of vision document

Shillong, Nov 22 (UNI) The North Eastern Council (NEC) has been entrusted with the task of the preparing a draft 'Vision 2020' to the National Institute of Public Finance&Policy (NIPFP), official sources said here today.

The document would provide an integrated, holistic and regional perspective to the development of the North Eastern region, sources said.

Earlier, the NEC and NIPFP had undertaken a study through nearly 40,000 respondents of the North Eastern states for the preparation of the document.

''The preparation of the draft Vision document is in the final stages and the draft will be submitted for consideration to the next Plenary meeting final stages of the NEC, scheduled for December 10-11,''official sources said.

While the overall development of NER has, indeed, been lower than the national average, the pace of economic development expressed in terms of the growth of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) over a period of time in the North East, has varied from state to state and year to year.

The per capita GSDP 2004-05, in respect of three states, Sikkim, Nagaland and Mizoram, was more than the national average.

The Vision document had put thrust on connectivity (road, rail, air, inland waterways and telecommunication), agriculture and allied sectors, power health, education and tourism.
