States against setting central agency to investigate federal crime

New Delhi, Nov 21 (UNI) Most states have expressed reservations apprehensions against the setting of a central agency for the investigation and prosecution of crimes having inter-state and international linkages, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal told the house in a written reply that various Committees such as Malimath Committee, Prof Madhav Menon Committee and Soli Sorabjee Committee have emphasised the need for investigation and prosecution of crimes having inter-state and international linkages by a central agency.

The Home Ministry has been considering this issue in consultation with the State Governments, but most of the States, from which comments have been received, have expressed reservations/apprehensions on this issue as police and public order were subjects in the State list in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, he said.
