Marathon is not mere running but a science: Cuban coach

Pune, Nov 21 (UNI) Marathon is not mere running but a science which requires impeccable planning before, during and after the event, observed Cuban coach Adalberto Collazo Macias.

Macias, Professor of Theory and Methodology for Sports training at the Cuban Sports University, was specially invited by Pralhad Sawant, general secretary of the Pune International Marathon Trust (PIMT), to deliver a lecture on the eve of the Vodafone 22nd International Marathon for the benefit of long-distance athletes, coaches and technical officials.

Addressing a large gathering at the Marathon Bhavan here this evening, Macias stressed that the preparatory methodology, strategy and tactics were needed to be applied for long-distance running.

To reach the goal, the long-distance athletes need to have a concrete plan and application of strategy during the race according to the situation.

The physical and psychological levels of the athletes also need to be examined for the gruelling event. The competition level of others in the field, weather, time and food too play major roles, he said.

Earlier, international coach and referee Ram Bhagwat who presided over the function dwelt at length on the Indian long-distance runners, their physical conditions, attitude and planning. The Indians lay more stress on endeavour and strength, he pointed out.

The youthful looking Macia very enthusiastically said, ''I have come to India to help the athletes.'' In his very elaborate talk, the Cuban coach also touched upon intake of food and liquid before, during and after the race. The runners have to have supplements of carbohydrates days before the event.

During the run, they should start the run slow for about two kilometres for self analysis to know how one feels that day. He also laid importance on dos and don'ts during the run. Intake of water must be continued even after the race and should continue on the carbohydrate diet. The recovery aspect should come only after a week's rest of slow jogging, swimming and walking, Macias recommended.

Rounding off his talk, he pointed out the role of the coach which is by far the most important aspect in the long-distance training and running.

The other technical officials present on the occasion were Baptist D'souza, Ms Guruvash Kaur, Ms Bhagyashree Bile, Mr U L Saini and Mr Mathew.
