Mumbai, Nov 21 (UNI) The Malaysian junior national team will be the star attraction in the 3rd all India Savio Cup basketball tournament for men and women which will be held at Don Bosco here from November 25 to December 2.
The tournament which will be organised by the Don Bosco Recreation Centre of the Don Bosco High School will see the cream of basketball teams in India vying for top honours.
The organisers addressing a press conference here said that the men's challenge will be led by the national champions and last year's runners-up Services, followed by the national runners-up Kerala, Railways, Punjab, ONGC (Uttaranchal), Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
Among the women, challenging the Malaysian junior squad will be defending champions Southern Railways, who recently won the ''Ramu Memorial'' title here. The other teams are national runners-up Delhi, a Rest of India side and Maharashtra.
The competition in the men's section will include a round robin league in two pools of four teams each with the top team in each pool meeting in the final, while for the women there will be a round robin league for the five teams with the top two teams qualifying for the final, Fr Crispino D'Souza, the tournament secretary informed.
The total prize money for the tourney will be Rs 2 lakhs and apart from the winner's purse, there will be the 'Player Of The Tournament' award in the men's and women's category.
The tournament this year will be played on international standards Terraflex courts and will be held under floodlights in a specially erected stadium. The semifinals will be held on December 1 and the finals on December 2, Fr Crispino further added.
