Srinagar, Nov 21 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Vigilance Organisation (VO) conducted raids on the residential premises of a Public Health Engineering (PHE) department official in north Kashmir and Srinagar today.
A VO spokesman said residential premises of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, Junior Assistant presently posted as Cashier in PHE Division Handwara were searched by a group of officials at Handwara and Srinagar.
The searches were still going on when the reports last came in, he added.
He said during the raids movable and immovable assets valued at over Rs 1.75 crore, disproportionate to his known sources of income, were unearthed.
During verification, it was found that the official indulged in corrupt practices during his service. He purchased about 15 kanals of land in Handwara town between 1998-2001 in his own name and in the name of his wife for about Rs 15 lakhs.
The accused has constructed a house on a portion of the said land involving an expenditure of Rs 60 lakhs.
He is also in possession of three cars.
Bhat's salary is his only source of income and is drawing about Rs 10,000 per month.
During the course of search of his houses, cash certificates worth Rs 25 lakhs in J&K Bank, Handwara in the name of his wife besides incriminating material such as insurance policies and information relating to other movable property has been recovered, besides other documents of kanal of land at Umarabad at a cost of Rs 15 lakhs a few months ago.
