Singapore, Nov 21 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said that East Asia is an ideal vehicle for promoting peace, stability and economic prosperity and stressed the need for greater people to people contact for preserving common cultural heritage.
Speaking at the Asian civilisations museum exhibition on the 'Nalanda Trail: Buddhism in India, China and South East Asia', the Prime Minister said the Nalanda University was a part of the intellectual life of Asia for over seven centuries. It was one of the first residential universities, which attracted students from China, Japan, Korea, Persia and Turkey.
''Through exchange of scholars and spread of idea, the university made an invalauble contribution to international understanding'', he said.
He added that Nalanda will focus on becoming a centre for excellence for research and teaching with an emphasis on postgraduate studies. It will be established as an international university through an international treaty.
The exhibition has recreated the spiritual and physical splendour of Nalanda. There are great masterpieces like the Nalanda copper plate, depicting the royal patronage to the Nalanda University and the sacred relics of the Buddha.
Singapore Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loon also attended the function along with other ASEAN dignitories.
