Washington, Nov 21: US President George W Bush still wants the emergency rule imposed by President Pervez Mushrraf in Pakistan on November 3, to be lifted, says White House Spokeswoman Dana Perino. Ms Perino made this observation here yesterday when her attention was drawn to the reported release of over 3,000 prisoners detained since emergency rule was decreed in Pakistan.
''I haven't been able to check that out, obviously that would be a positive development. Let us get a little bit more detail on it,'' she said.
She, however, said, ''as the situation evolves (in Pakistan), we are getting closer, hopefully, to when that emergency order would be lifted, the elections would be held, and that President Musharraf would take off the uniform and be a civilian President, rather than trying to be both.'' According to reports from Islamabad, Pakistan's Interior Ministry has released some 3,400 prisoners but some 2,000 others are still in detention.
