Baghdatis joins line up of stars for Chennai Open

By Staff

Chennai, Nov 21 (UNI) World No 16 and Australian Open runner up, Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus has confirmed his participation in the US 436,000 dollars ATP world tour Chennai Open to be held here from December 31 next to January 6, 2008.

Along with Russia's Youzhny, Baghdatis will be the second top 20 ranked player to make his first appearance at Chennai Open.

Baghdatis playing style is relaxed and smooth. His main strength is a powerful forehand and a natural talent for placement.

Baghdatis was ranked as high as No 8 in August 2006. He also has a rare distinction to his credit. Of the 133 players ranked in the top 10 since 1973, Baghdatis is one of only three players to break into the top 10 before winning his first career ATP title, Cedric Pioline and Mikael Pernfors being the other two.

Fernando Soler, Tournament Director Chennai Open 2008 said, ''Marcos is a special player. He is a wonderfully ebullient character who radiates immense enjoyment whenever and wherever he plays.

Managing Director, IMG India, Balu Nayar says '' it augurs well for the prospects of Chennai Open 2008. Having yet another top 20 player symbolises the popularity of the tournament and I am sure Chennai will see some very tough and interesting matches this year.'' UNI
