Bangalore, Nov 20 (UNI) ''New initiatives like 'Rs-One lakh Car' can spell danger to environment. The best way to reduce congestion in the cities is metro rail system. Mass Transport System should be given highest priority,'' TATA Energy Research Institute (TERI) Chairman A Ramachandran said today.
Addressing a seminar on 'Energy Technologies for 21st Century Buildings and Transportation' organised by Maini Group and Loughborough University of UK here, he said rapid urbanisation and environmental degradation may result in decline of world's fresh water by a half in the next 20 years.
He said the construction sector was the main culprit for more carbon emission, which was a threat to the environment.
Stressing on clean energy initiatives to reduce carbon emission, he said ''investment in environment friendly technologies in construction and transport will pay back handsomely.'' He said the hybrid technology in transport was late to arrive in developing countries though it was introduced 20 years ago in Europe.
Mr Ramachandran said lack of unified governance due to frequent change of governments and lack of coordination between the government departments were affecting implementation of ecologically friendly measures.
