Police resort to lathi charge as villagers picket station

Cuddalore, Nov 20 (UNI) Ten persons were injured when police resorted to lathi charge to disperse a mob, which picketed the Kullanchavady police station in this district today, following an alleged lock-up death last night.

According to the villagers, Ramalingam (40) was handed over to the Kullanchavady police around 2200 hrs last night, following some trouble in a private bus. He was found dead, with injuries on his head and body near the police station.

The villagers led by Ramalingam's wife Gowri, picketed the police station, forcing the police to resort to lathi charge.

Mr Velmurugan, the Legislator from Panrutti constituency said it was a clear case of lock-up death.

He told newspersons that he had lodged a complaint with the District Collector and talked to the Chief Secretary and DGP over phone and demanded an inquiry into the death.

He also demanded that all the police personnel in the Kullenchavady station be shifted and a solatium of Rs five lakh be given to the family of the deceased.

He said they would not collect the body as the police beat up the public and took away the body.

Police personnel were deployed in the area following tension.
