Sirsa, Nov 20 (UNI) The students of a local college here today held up traffic on National Highway 10 for three hours pressing for immediate arrest of the cop suspended for manhandling an MBA woman student.

The students of Chaudhury Devi Lal University (CDLU), backed by students of the Government college, gathered near the general bus stand on the NH-10, also demanding action against police officials guilty of cane charge earlier today on the peaceful demonstrators protesting over the incident.

Police had yesterday registered a case against a policeman after a delegation of CDLU officials and student met Superintendent of Police and sought action against the accused for manhandling and misbehaving with a woman student. The cop was allegedly accompanied by the contractor involved in some construction work in the university.

However, the accused policeman was sighted roaming about the university this morning, which angered the students who marched in a large number towards the National Highway.

They were stopped from entering the city by a police team led by Sirsa City SHO, which allegedly resorted to lathicharge to disperse the agitating students causing minor injuries to some demonstrators.

Later, agitated students re-grouped, backed by collegiates from other institutions, and sat in front of the bus stand on NH-10 demanding action also against policemen involved in the batoncharge.

The students dispersed after three hours only when the SP and Divisional Commisioner assured them of early arrest of the guilty policeman as well as strict action against those who had resorted to cane-charge.

Meanwhile, various student organisations, including INSO and AISF have condemned the incident of a policeman manhandling a woman student as well as use of force upon peaceful student demonstrators.
