Nagpur, Nov 19 (UNI) Shiv Sena Working President Uddhav Thackeray has dismissed as incorrect the claims of the Maharashtra Government that the incidence of suicides by farmers in Vidarbha region of the state due to indebtedness was decreasing.
Speaking at the conclusion of the party's ''Deta Ka Jata'' (Give or Go) rally, which was staged to demand complete loan waiver for farmers, here today, Mr Thackeray said that the claim was false as the government was recording other reasons for several suicides caused by indebtedness. Reasons other than debt were noted on the records of the suicides, he said.
The government's pride in the so-called decrease in the incidence of suicides was inappropriate because the claim was false and the fact remained that farmers were still ending their lives because of debt, Mr Thackeray said. It showed that the incumbent Democratic Front (DF) government in the state had failed miserably to provide succour to the distressed farmer, he also said.
Mr Thackeray said that the DF government should give complete loan waiver to debt-ridden farmers of Vidarbha or quit power. Asserting that it would not be too difficult for the DF government to waive the loan since a similar dispensation was in power at the Centre, Mr Thackeray said that it had no right to continue if it could not get this done. ''Had the saffron alliance been in power in the state and the Centre, we would have given the loan waiver without much ado,'' he said.
The rally, which passed through several villages in Amravati, Wardha and Nagpur districts over the past week, marked only the first phase of the agitation to get loan waiver for farmers, with a farmers' rally scheduled to be held in Nagpur on December 2 next, he added.
