Maoists blow up railway tracks in Birbhum during 48-hr bandh
Suri (Birbhum), Nov 19 (UNI) Maoist rebels today blew up a large portion of the Sainthia-Andal section of Eastern Railways near Suri.
''Apart from posters carrying claims by Maoists of having triggered the blast, the way in which the explosion was executed throws light on their involvement,'' DSP, Headquaters, Dhiren Ghosh said.
Today was the first day of the 48-hour bandh called by the Maoists in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Orissa in protest against atrocities on villagers in Nandigram.
Police said the blast, which occurred at Khoyrasol station near Maliara village, blew up one-and-half metre stretch of railway tracks. As a result train services had been badly affected and trains in this section were being diverted through Khana-Sainthia section.
A couple of days ago CPI(M) State Secretary Biman Bose and other party leaders had claimed at a district conference here that Maoist activities were increasing in the district, especially due to the district's proximity with Jharkhand.
