Govt takes measures to protect girls, arrest sex ratio decline

New Delhi, Nov 19 (UNI) The Government would be launching the Scheme of Conditional Cash Transfer for girl child with insurance cover to prevent the decline in sex ratio in the country, the Parliament was informed today.

The scheme has been included in the Annual Plan 2007-08 and includes cash transfers to the family of the girl child based on the fulfillment of four important conditionalities viz. birth and registration of the girl child, immunisation, retention in school and delaying marriage beyond 18 years of age. The procedural formalities for approval of the above scheme are under process, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

She said the Haryana government, under its Ladli Scheme, provides cash incentives to all parent residents of the State whose second girl child is born on or after August 2, 2005. As many as 16,623 girls have been covered under the scheme up to August, 2007.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government, under its Girl Child Protection Scheme, provided cash incentives to the permanent residents of Delhi up to two girl children in a family. During the year 2006-07, 1,960 girls were given the benefit and during the year 2007-08. 1,560 girls have been covered upto October 30, 2007, she added.
