Sallu wants Afridi to get his confidence back

By Staff

Lahore, Nov 18 (UNI) Shahid Afridi's omission from the Test squad may have surprised many but if the chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed is to be believed then the all-rounder needs to get back to some form to stake a claim in the side.

Justifying his decision, Salahuddin said, ''We want him to play some domestic cricket and get back to his normal form.'' ''He is such a senior player that we don't want him travelling with the team as a reserve player,'' he said.

Afridi was instrumental in Pakistan's victory in the second one-day match at Mohali with his bowling and batting. The hard hitting batsman batted at different positions in the ODI series against India.

His batting and bowling though have been off-colour in the Kanpur and Gwalior matches.

Afridi's supporters point out that there is definitely something wrong with the way his body language has fallen after the Mohali ODI.

''He is normally a very positive player and always on the move,'' former captain Rashid Latif was quoted as saying by 'The News'.

The chief selector said it was difficult to strike a balance in the Test playing XI and pick Afridi if the tour selection committee decided to play three pacers and one spinner.

Afridi's supporters argue that that his record in Tests is far more impressive than some of the other players retained for the longer version of the game.

The 27-year-old Afridi has scored 1683 runs with five centuries and eight half centuries at an average of nearly 38 in 26 Tests and has scalped 47 wickets with his leg spin.
