Chennai, Nov 18 (UNI) Condemning the murder of political functionaries yesterday, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder Dr S Ramadoss today alleged that mercenary killings characteristic to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, are now occuring in hitherto peaceful Tamil Nadu.
In a statement here strongly condemning the murder of DMK Tiruvarur District Secretary ''Poodi'' Kalaichelvan and two AIADMK functionaries in Chengalpattu, he said such killings were a matter of serious concern as they endanger public peace, Dr Ramadoss wanted the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate steps to cut the political-goonda nexus to prevent such incidents in future.
He also demanded that the Police-criminal nexus should be snapped to prevent such incidents.
''Such incidents are commonplace in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. But this culture is slowly rearing its head in Tamil Nadu'', he added.
''The mercenaries with the backing of some political leaders have started entering into politics. This new culture is driving fear in the minds of the people and those involved in public life'', he claimed.
Instead of debating under whose regime such incidents were happening most, he said such anti-social forces and political parties which were backing such elements should be identified and rooted out.
Dr Ramadoss wanted the government to appoint honest and sincere officers in the top level of the police department and they should be given free hand to dealt with such incidents.
''There should not be any political interference'', he said and added that if such steps were not taken, the situation would go out of control.
''Steps should be taken to prevent Tamil Nadu from becoming Bihar and Uttar Pradesh'', he said, adding everyone has the responsbility to prevent such incidents.
''But those in power should realise that they have more responsbility and act accordingly'', he added.
