Chennai, Nov 17 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government today promulgated two ordinances upgrading Erode and Tiruppur Municipalities as Corporations with effect from January 1 next year.
The promulgation of the Ordinances followed an announcement made by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi that Erode, the birth place of his mentor E V R Periyar, would be upgraded as Corporation to fulfil the dream of the late rationalist leader, who had passed a resolution to this effect on November 17, 1917 as President of the Erode Municipality.
Mr Karunanidhi had made the announcement on September 15, the birth anniversary of Periyar.
A decision to upgrade Tiruppur as Corporation was also taken to speed up the growth of the textile city and to help develop infrastructure.
An official release said besides the current territorial jurisdiction of Erode, the third grade municipalities of Periya Semur, Veerappan Chattiram, Kasipalayam, and Soorampatti would form part of the proposed Erode Corporation.
The town panchayats of P P Agraharam and Sooriyampalayam would also come under the Corporation area.
Similarly, the third grade municipalities of Velampalayam and Nallur and the village panchayats of Murugampalayam, Chettipalayam would fall part of Tiruppur Corporation.
