Mumbai trounce TN by eight wickets to earn full points

Chennai, Nov17 (UNI) With the hosts' batsmen failing yet again, Mumbai crushed Tamil Nadu by eight wickets to earn their first outright win in the superleague on the third day in the Elite Group 'A' Ranji trophy cricket match played here today.

Set an easy target of 104 with the final day's play tomorrow remaining, the reigning champions Mumbai reached the target with ease, losing just two wickets in 19 overs after bowling out Tamil Nadu for 214 in 76.2 overs in their second innings.

Off spinner Ramesh Powar's five wicket haul for 68 runs and medium pacer Avishkar Salvi's bag of 3-27 were the highlights for Mumbai.

Prashant Naik top scored with a belligerant knock of 57 off 32 balls in 52 minutes. He hit five sixes and two fours and set the team on course to the easy win with a partnership of 51 runs for the second wicket with left-hander Ajinkay Rehane (28, 48 balls, four fours). Captain Amol Majumdar remained not out on 2. The other opener Wasim Jaffar made 17 of 17 balls with four fours.

Mumbai gained five points to raise their tally to a healthy eight from two matches. They had claimed three for first innings lead in the earlier outing against Karnataka. Tamil Nadu have just one from two outings, the point coming their way from the unfinished first match against Maharashtra.
