West Midnapore, Nov 17 (UNI) Proscribed Maoist ultras today exploded a landmine at the Panchayat office at Bhulabheda under Belpahari police station in the early hours today.
West Midnapore District Magistrate (DM) N S Nigam said the militants also set ablaze a portion of the office and burnt official papers.
Superintendent of Police R Rajashekharan said some posters and placards, put up by the Maoist ultras, were found near the spot, calling for a two-day bandh in South Bengal on November 19 and 20, to protest the ''CPI(M) government in West Bengal as well as the police and CRPF's atrocities in Nandigram.'' Sources in Bhulabheda, about six kms from here, said they heard the explosion at about 0130 hours this morning, following which they fled from their homes and assembled on the roads.
Meanwhile, the fire at the Panchayat office could not yet be doused as no fire brigade had arrived on the spot from Jhargram, the DM added.
