DMK functionary killed in bomb attack

A
functionary

ruling
DMK
was
killed
in
a
bomb
attack
at
Tiruvarur
district
of
Tamil
Nadu
today.
Reports
received
here
said
a
car-borne
gang,
hurled
country-
made
bombs
at
DMK
Triuvarur
District
Secretary
''Poondi''
Kalaichelvan
and
later
attacked
him
with
lethal
weapons,
killing
him
on
the
spot.
The incident, which occurred in front of his residence, has sent shock waves through the locality. As tension prevailed in the area, police pickets were posted to prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi expressed shock over the killing and said Kalaichelvan's death was an ''irreparable loss.'' He also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.
A report from Tiruvarur said the body of Mr Kalaichelvan was taken to the Tiruvarur Government Hospital for a post-mortem.
Personal enmity was stated to be the reason for the killing.
As the news spread, shopkeepers downed their shutters in Koradacheri village, where his house was situated and in other parts of Tiruvarur. Bus services to and from Tiruvarur were also suspended following the incident.
