Yusuf's 5 wicket haul restricts Bengal to 370

By Staff

Vadodara, Nov 16 (UNI) Failing to capitalise on the double century opening stand between Anustup Mazumdar and Arindam Das, Bengal folded up their first innings at 370 on the second day of their four-day Ranji trophy Elite Group 'B'' match against hosts Vadodara at Motibaug Palace ground here today.

Vadodara off spinner Yusuf Pathan with a fine five wicket haul wrecked the Bengal batting line-up in the pre-lunch session with the able support of medium pacer Sunit Singh, who chipped in with three for 75.

In reply, Vadodara were 129 for the loss of three of their top order batsmen--Satyajit Parab (37), skipper Connor williams (15) and Azhar Bilakhia (7), while Rakesh Solanki and Pinal Shah were batting on 43 and 21 runs respectively when stumps were drawn.

Resuming at the impressive overnight score of 262 for two, Bengal's batting line-up caved in like a pack of cards after Arindam das was dismissed by left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar in the very second ball of the day. Das, who along with Majumdar put on 221 runs for the opening stand yesterday, made his exit without adding any run to his overnight score of 117 being caught by Azhar Bilakhia at forward short-leg off Pawar. Das faced 273 balls and hit 18 boundaries during his marathon 363 minute innings.

The other overnight batsman Manoj Tiwary, who hit a double century against Hyederabad, also did not last long as Yusuf scalped him soon for 37 after he added nine runs to his individual score.

Having claimed two quick wickets Vadodara fought their way back into the game with fierce pace and spin attack by Sunit and Yusuf, who chipped in with the remaining six wickets for 94 runs a couple of minutes before lunch. All-rounder Yusuf returned with a fine figure of 35.1-9-83-5.

Replying to Bengal's 370, Vadodara lost three wickets with only 67 on the board in 30.4 overs. But Rakesh Solanki and Pinal Shah playing sensibly consolidated the side's innings by the close of play with their unbeaten 62 runs fourth wicket stand lasting for nearly one-and-a-half hours.
