Chennai, Nov 16 (UNI) The Metropolitan Magistrate Court today granted bail to MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran and 260 others, arrested after they attempted to participate in a rally to condole the killing of LTTE Political Wing Chief S P Thamilchelvan.
Fifth Metropolitan Magistrate S Muruganandam granted the bail after allowing the petitions filed on behalf of Mr Vaiko and others, who were arrested on November 12 and remanded to judicial custody.
The bail was granted on the condition that each of the applicants should furnish a surety and a personal bond for Rs 5,000.
Mr Vaiko, Mr Nedumaran and others were charged under Sections 13(1)(2) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 7 (1) (a) of Criminal Amendment Act and Section 143 and 188 IPC for attempting to organise a rally in support of the LTTE, a banned organisation in the country.
In their bail applications, Mr Vaiko and others submitted they had not committed any offence, punishable under the above Sections and pleaded that they be released on bail.
Mr Vaiko and others, who were lodged at the central prison in suburban Puzhal, were likely to be released tomorrow morning as their lawyers were yet to complete the process of furnishing sureties, party sources said.
