Sowing of winter crops begins, wheat covers 34.75 lakh ha

New Delhi, Nov 16 (UNI) The sowing of Rabi crops has started in some states of the country and till today wheat has been sown in 34.75 lakh ha as compared to 52.71 lakh ha during the corresponding period last year.

Winter rice sowing has also started in some southern states. So far, 35,000 ha area has come under rice plantation, as per reports received in the Agriculture Ministry.

Coarse cereals have been sown in 44.55 lakh ha as compared to 48.88 lakh ha by this time in 2006.

Rabi oilseeds have been sown in 47.24 lakh ha as compared to 68.18 lakh ha in last year. Mustard/rapeseed coverage has reached 35.10 lakh ha as compared to 52.76 lakh ha last year.

Rabi pulses cover dropped 67.5 lakh ha when compared to 69.85 lakh ha in the corresponding period last year.
