Karnataka record impressive win

New Delhi, Nov 16 (UNI) Somanna scored a brace as Karnataka opened their campaign with a facile 5-1 win over Indian Universties while debutant IHF (u-21) surprised CRPF 2-0 in the 44th Nehru Hockey tournament here today.

In another match Punjab National Bank (PNB) downed Corps of Signals by a solitary goal scored by Jatinder Saroha off a penalty corner five minutes before the final whistle.

Karnataka dished out a purposeful hockey as they outplayed their rivals in the all departments of the game and led 2-0 at half time.

Anup Anthony put the winers ahead in the 19th minute while Row Bhengra shot home the second goal just before the break.

Karnataka slammed three goals in a space of five minutes in the last stages of the game to complete the tally.

Somanna struck in the 60th minute to make it 3-0 but a minute later Navin Kumar convertred a penalty corner to reduce the gap for the Universties.

However Karnataka retaliated with a furious counter and Somana again found the target to make it 4-1.This happened in the 62nd minute.

K P Dinesh then chipped in with a goal in the 65th minute to take the tally to 5-1.

In the last match of the day, I.H.F (u-21) scored a goal in each house to upset experienced CRPF 2-0.

Parmod Kumar gave IHF the lead in the 14th minute and A B Cheeyana sealed the match in his team's favboure when he scored the second goal in the 56th minute.
