Shimla, Nov 16 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manisha Nanda today asked the voters to ensure that their names were entered in the electoral rolls and in one constituency only.
In case of registration of an elector's name in two different assembly constituencies or registration in more than one place in the same assembly constituency, he should immediately apply on Form-7 to the concerned electoral registration officer (SDM/ADM) for deletion, she said in a release here.
Ms Nanda said the eligible voters, as per Section 17 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, could not be registered as a voter in more than one assembly constituency.
Also, as per Section 18 of the Act, no person would be entitled to be registered as a voter in the electoral roll for any Assembly Constituency more than once, she said.
The CEO said Section 19 and 20 of the Act prescribe that a person would only be registered in the electoral roll in that assembly constituency of which he or she was a resident.
she said making a false statement or declaration in writing was punishable offence under section 31 of the Act and such person would be punishable with imprisonment, which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both, .
She said that it had been observed that due to ignorance these legal and statutory provisions were not adhered to. Due to which the voters get themselves registered in two different places.
Violations of these statutory provisions, if any, come into its notice then the Election Department would initiate necessary legal action as per above provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, she added.
