Ayurvedic drugs will be manufactured at Patiala Pharmacy

Chandigarh, Nov 16 (UNI) The Punjab Health Department has decided to manufacture ayurvedic drugs at Patiala Pharmacy to provide genuine drugs to patients.

Raw material worth Rs one crore has already been purchased for manufacturing of drugs from medicinal plants and herbs under scientific supervision.

Speaking after inaugurating Refresher Course for Senior Ayurvedic Medical Officers here today, Health Minister Lakshmi Kanta Chawla said that Punjab is the first state to start this novel experiment to provide genuine ayurvedic drugs to patients.

She said that a unique herbal garden was being set up in 7 acres of land in Zirakpur where all kinds of herbs and medicinal plants would be grown.

The Vigilance wing of the Department has been strengthened to check the production and sale of spurious Ayurvedic drugs in the State.

Seeking cooperation of general public, the Minister said that they should give information about any units manufacturing spurious drugs in their vicinity.

She said the first Ayurveda University was also coming up in Hoshiarpur.

Referring to the departmental set-up, the Minister said that vacant posts would be filled after restructuring of the department and ayurveda doctors given their due promotions within stipulated time frame.

She said that the proposal of allowing in-service ayurveda doctors to obtain post graduation degree in their respective specializations was under active consideration of the government.
