Three NE children awarded on Bal Divas

Agartala, Nov 15 (UNI) The Union Women and Child Development Ministry has awarded three students of the Northeastern region, each from Tripura, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, on the occasion of Bal Divas for their exceptional achievements in the fields of art, culture, sports and academics.

Official sources said here today that altogether 36 children in the age group of 4-15 years were recognised for their exceptional achievements and awarded medals, certificates and cash prizes of Rs 20,000 for winning a gold medal and Rs 10,000 for winning a silver medal respectively yesterday.

The gold medal at the national level was awarded to Fenil Chetan Shah of Gujarat for winning several national and international chess tournaments.

Silver medals were awarded to 35 children for their performance in budding scientific work, mathematics, painting, folk songs, classical dance, international skates player and children with exceptional photographic memory.

Nishikanta Malakar for the fine arts and paintings of Tripura, St Mary's Orphanage at Nongstoin in Meghalaya and Lama Thupten Phuntsok at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh were bestowed with silver medals, officials stated.

Tripura Social Welfare Minister Manik Dey said a number of initiatives were planned and significant increase of allocation for children-related schemes and programmes were initiated by the Union Ministry and the states had been implementing the programmes, which included setting up a mechanism to monitor the incidents of child rights violation.
