New Delhi, Nov 15 (UNI) The BJP today protested against the assault on judges and lawyers in Pakistan in the wake of Emergency rule and called for immediate restoration of democracy and rule of justice.
In a memorandum submitted by the legal cell of the BJP to the Pakistan Ambassador here, the party said it was a serious matter of concern to see "mockery of democracy and murder of human rights" in Pakistan under the garb of emergency which it described as martial law.
It said the blatant attack on the constitution and the appalling treatment meted out to the judges was like a "death knoll" to a free society.
"We believe that Pakistan is not in a state of emergency but under the rule of martial law as the Provisional Constitutional Order was signed by Gen Pervez Musharraf in the capacity of the Chief of Army Staff and not as the President of Pakistan," it said.
The memorandum accused President Musharraf of "continuing a reign of terror and despotism, and abusing the process of law with the sole view of perpetuating his unjust rule." Recalling the emergency days in India, it said democracy was restored there because of a strong independent judiciary and civil rights. "We appeal that in Pakistan too, the rule of law may be preserved and protected..." the memorandum said.
