Guwahati, Nov 15 (UNI) A vernacular daily today came under criticism in the Assam Assembly for its 'incorrect reporting' of Assembly proceedings, with Speaker TB Rai instructing the House privilege committee to conduct an enquiry.

The breach of privilege motion was brought in the Assembly by Independent MLA Mahibur Haque against the daily 'Aji' for a news item that the paper carried yesterday in which it was incorrectly reported that the House had to be adjourned after Opposition MLAs nearly assaulted two Cabinet ministers.

He also raised objection at the despicable manner in which the proceedings of the House have been reported by the newspaper.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bharat Narah, speaking on the admissibility of the breach of privilege motion, said the newspaper had been targeting a single minister for the past one year.

He described the manner in which the newspaper handled the reports as 'undesirable, undignified, unbecoming'.

CPM legislator Ananta Deka, urging that the motion be admitted, said the paper had in fact insulted the Assembly.

Speaker Rai admitted the motion and the House privilege committee was vested with the responsibility of looking into the matter.
