Lahore, Nov 14 (UNI) Riding on Vivek Shokeen's brilliance, India piped Pakistan 2-1 in the first leg of the Tennis series here today.
Vivek won his singles and then combined superbly with National Champion Ashutosh Singh in the doubles to put it across the hosts for whom seasoned campaigner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi waged a lone battle.
Ashutosh and Aqeel Khan lost their respective singles for India and Pakistan after which it all boiled down to the doubles in which the visitors emerged trimphant.
Vivek, yesterday, had put India in the lead after he outplayed Aqeel Khan in straight sets.
However, Qureshi drew parity for the hosts, overwhelming Ashutosh 6-3, 6-4.
The big serving Pakistani forced his rival to commit several unforced errors and then held on to the break-points in both the sets to defeat the Indian and make it 1-1 in the tie.
However in the doubles, the Indian pair combined superbly and never allowed their rival duo of Qureshi and Aqeel to settle down.
The Pakistanis looked tentative throughout the encounter as the Delhi boys emerged victorious 7-6 (5), 6-2 to clinch the first leg of the series.
The second and final leg of the series will be played in Islamabad from tomorrow.
