New Delhi, Nov 14 (UNI) The Delhi Government today created a separate department of Women and Child Development out of the existing Department of Social Welfare on the occasion of the Children's Day.
''The new Department will focus exclusively on all schemes for the welfare of women and children to increase their reach effectively,'' said Delhi Social Welfare Minister Dr Yoganand Shastri.
Dr Shastri also launched a website of the new Department in a function at the Delhi Secretariat.
Since the creation of the Department of Social Welfare 38 years ago, work in the Department has multiplied manifold, with Delhi's population increasing from about 25 lakhs to about 160 lakhs.
In order to address the growing needs of women and child and to ensure the proper implementation of the schemes and acts meant for the upliftment of women and child and also to ensure the proper management and utilisation of funds allocated in this sector, a separate department for women and child development is the need of the hour.
Dr Shastri informed that the new Department would handle 18 areas including juvenile justice, child rights, child care and child protection and Stree Shakti and Gender Resource Centre, women empowerment issues and ICDS projects. It would also administer 13 statues relating to women and child and would have control on 31 institutions.
The proposed plan budget for the new Department will be Rs 66.93 crore and non-plan budget would be Rs 17.47 crore. There will be one common Secretary for both the Departments of Women and Child Department and Department of Social Welfare, he said.
