Kottayam Nov 14: Kerala Opposition leader Oommen Chandy, MLA, today said the Communist Party of India(Marxist) would not be allowed to implement the Nandigram model of Bengal in Kerala.

The former Chief Minister was inaugurating a dharna before the Collectorate here as part of the agitation in support of various demands including stern action against the culprits in the flat mishap in which two nuns were killed, adequate compensation to the victim of the Changanacherry campus violence incident and action against the real culprits and Minister Binoy Viswam"s resignation.

The Government had given ten exemptions for constructing the flat at Nagampadam and even after getting the exemptions the owners by using their political influence had violated all safety measures, resulting in the death of two nuns. The Government was not taking action against the culprits and was trying to protect them, Mr Chandy alleged.

He said in the Changanacherry campus violence incident in which an ASI was killed, adequate compensation should be given to the ASI's family since he was killed while discharging his duties. Further steps should be taken to book the real culprits in the case, he demanded.

Referring to the demand for the resignation of Mr Viswam, he said Chief Minister V S Achutanandan had cancelled the Merchiston land deal since there was corruption in it. Government stance on the issue and action against the officials, who only acted according to the direction of the Minister and allowing Mr Viswam to go scot-free would not be tolerated, he added.

The CPI(M) was trying to implement two types of justices, one for common man and another for party supporters, which would not be allowed in the State, the former Chief Minister warned.

Mr Chandy criticised the CPI(M) for attacking Medha Patkar for raising her voice against the homicide at Nandigram.

Former Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, KPCC General Secretaries, Joseph Vazhakkan and Ajay Tharayil, Secretary Lathika Subhash, DCC President K C Joseph MLA and other leaders addressed the dharna.

Earlier, hundreds of Congress activists under the leadership of the DCC President K C Joseph staged a demonstration in the town.
