Chennai, Nov 14 (UNI) Accusing the DMK Government of betraying the people of the State on inter-state water issues, AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today said the party would organise a massive agitation on November 26, seeking to restrain Andhra Pradesh from constructing a check dam across Palar river.
In a statement here, she said the agitation, to be led by party's Organisation Secretary S Semmalai, would be held in Vellore, the district, which would be affected immediately, if the dam was constructed.
She said partymen, general public and farmers from five districts- Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chennai, which received water from Palar river, should take part in the agitation and register their protest to the Andhra Pradesh Government.
Ms Jayalalithaa said when the Andhra Pradesh Government was all set to lay the foundation stone for the check dam at Ganesapuram, near Kuppam, on December six, the DMK Government remained silent, compromising the interest of the people of the five districts.
She said when Andhra Pradesh Government initiated the move, her government in February 2006, filed a petition in the Supreme Court and after the DMK came to power, it took no step to expedite the case.
The AIADMK leader said when the party organised a fast in Vellore in January last on the issue, Public Works Minister Duraimurugan had said Andhra Pradesh Government had no plan to build the dam.
Going one step further, Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy had said the state government would ensure that the Ministry of Environment did not give clearance to the project, but no action was taken now, she said.
Ms Jayalalithaa charged that the DMK Government had failed to protect the interests of the people in inter-state water disputes like Cauvery, Mullaiperiyar and Palar and demanded the resignation of Chief Minsiter M Karunanidhi.
