NAPS-1 to achieve criticality by year-end

Mumbai, Nov 13 (UNI) Unit one of the Narora Atomic Power Station (NAPS-1), which had been shut down for carrying out major ageing management activities, including Enmasse Coolant Channel Replacement (EMCCR) in 2005, will be connected to the grid by the this year-end, a top official from Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) said today.

''We have got clearance from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) for making it critical. While the reactor is expected to achieve criticality by this month-end, the unit in all probaility will get operational by December,'' the official said on the sidelines of the international symposium on energy-related materials held at the Nehru Centre here today.

He also said the unit-5 of the Rwatbhata Atomic Power Station will become functional from January, while unit 4 of the Kaiga will take a little more time and should get functional by March next.
