Brisbane, Nov 12 (UNI) Riding on a superb bowling performance by Brett Lee, Australia today comprehensively defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 40 runs at the Gabba.
Resuming from their overnight score of 218 for the loss of five wickets, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 300 runs as their last five batsmen could only add a meagre 82 runs.
Australia's bowling spearhead, Brett Lee took three of the last last five wickets to fall today taking his match tally to a career best 8 for 112.
Overnight batsman Prasanna Jayawardene could only manage a single before he became Stuart Clark's 50th victim in test cricket. He was trapped leg before to Clark. Chamara Silva (43) did manage to pose a fight against the mighty Australians but his late flourish with the bat was still not enough to save the day and match for Sri Lanka.
As Australia went into lunch, they needed just one wicket to take a 1-0 lead in this two test series. Sri Lanka could add only 10 runs in their post lunch session as the last man Fernando (7) was caught by debutant Mitchell Johnson off Brett Lee.
Brett Lee was awarded man of the match for his superb display of bowling in which he took four wickets in each innings. Sri Lanka, though managed to put up a better show in the second innings but still a lot needs to be done to pose a successful challenge against the world champions.
Sri Lanka will now take on the Aussies in the second test at Hobart starting from this friday.
