Cargo service at Lengpui airport

Aizawl, Nov 12 (UNI) Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and aviation officials visited Lengpui airport yesterday to inspect the possibilities of introducing a cargo plane.

The Chief Minister had met top officials of commerce ministry during his recent visit to the national capital for introduction of cargo plane services in the state.

The central officials stressed the need on the broadening of the airport's runway to facilitate easy landing and taking off for cargo planes. Lengpui airport has a 8200-feet long runway, which was too narrow for cargo planes, and needed to extend the runway to at least 9500 feet, officials said.

The chief minister had also pleaded to the commerce ministry to provide air transport subsidy with the cargo plane services between Lengpui and Kolkata. The airport will be equipped with instrumental landing system to help easy landing during rainy and cloudy weather.

Other equipment like Dopler Very High Frequency Omni Directional Range (D-VOR), will be installed at Sakawrhmuituai hill shortly.

Construction of security road, more quarters and waiting room, maintenance of some quarters and extension of fire building, and security duty post have been executed by the state PWD with NEC fund of Rs 658 lakhs,sources added.
